Munich’s Dallmayr is an institution in Germany – much like Fortnum & Mason is to Blighty. And Cafe-Bistro Dallmayr – housed apart from the venerable delicatessen, in Munich's charming old town, near Marienplatz – is a bona fide brilliant way of getting a taste (literally) of this world-class gourmet temple. Less formal than the Michelin-starred Dallmayr Restaurant, Cafe-Bistro Dallmayr is probably best described as a traditional coffeehouse with an intimate, airy bistro section marked by bespoke dark red velvet banquette seating and perfectly-set white linen-covered tables at which sits an always elegant crowd. From midday, orders for some finest bistro-style meals you’re likely to taste in Germany, if not Europe, begin to be taken from a beautifully concise Modern European menu. Highlights include perfect fish and seafood, and a handful of homemade pasta dishes. Cafe-Bistro Dallmayr’s ice cream is really rather wonderful, too. Go, and feast like royalty on a surf’s wages.
