About The Quay

The Quay Restaurant in Ilfracombe is famous for its owner, Damien Hirst, but should rightfully be known for its amazing location, tasteful minimalist décor and cutting-edge British food. Hirst and partner transformed the former Victorian inn into a stylish restaurant, bar and cafe where they themselves like to eat. That means the highest-quality ingredients are magicked by chef Laurence Hill-Wickham into sophisticated dishes that have earned The Quay glowing mentions in every guide going, including a pair of AA rosettes. A six-course tasting menu and Sunday lunch are available and the wines are terrific. Book now for summer. We’re not joking.

Signature dish

The chef is an artist, too, so you can’t pin him down. But we’d bet our trust fund that the local beef and local fish dishes rank high on the hit parade.

Sample dishes

  • Asparagus charlotte, beetroot & balsamic sorbet, £10.25
  • Braised pork belly, chorizo & red peppers, tempura squid, pepper sauce, £19.95
  • A selection of desserts are available.

Very disappointing. Although the Atlantic Room where we dined was lovely with a fabulous view of the sun setting, the service was lacklustre and, for a restaurant where so much effort had been put in to its design, very much lacking in style. Serving two gin & tonics in different glasses, one of which was a cheap a half pint pub glass for example, just lacked the sort of attention to detail you would expect from a £50 a head restaurant. Could do a lot better.

The food was of the highest quality and it was exceeded by the first class service. It was pretty busy especially when you consider that it was winter time and pouring with rain. I would imagine this establishment is absolutely packed in the summer with the added attraction of a view of the harbour.

The Quay @ Ilfracombe, staff were very accommodating when they couldn't provide the booked table in the Atlantic Room and we accepted harbourside instead. We were happy to accept a complimentary cocktail in lieu of the mix up. Food was OK but the T-Bone steak with large wedges and vine tomatoes did seem a little uninspiring for the price. Whole sea Bass was good as were the sardines. Fabulous 3 cheeses but portion size was a let down. Oh yes the venue is quite special!
