About The Gainsborough

The spectacular Torquay sea front is the setting for your meal at Gainsborough Restaurant. Part of the imposing Victorian inspired Grand Hotel the restaurant is a large, bustling space whilst still retaining a relaxed holiday feel thanks to excellent service and, of course, those all important sea views. Bright, airy and comfortable this is certainly somewhere to relax and enjoy high quality food after a hard day on the English Riviera. The Gainsborough’s dining room features a daily changing menu overflowing with beautiful locally sourced ingredients with, of course, an excellent line in fresh fish.

Signature dish

Pan Fried John Dory Fillet with Ratatouille Vegetables and White Beans and Thyme Cream Sauce. Part of a set menu.

Booked here for a special anniversary meal with my girlfriend and while we had a very nice meal, I wasn't wowed like I would be in a Michelin starred restaurant. The service was prompt and efficient but a little rushed despite them not being overly busy. I get the impression that it's mainly hotel residents that eat here, as we were asked at least three times what our room number was (we weren't staying at the hotel).

The Gainsborough, Torquay. Staff very friendly throughout and not just in restaurant, would recommend starting and finishing meal with a drink in the bar. Set menu for three courses was wonderful value at under £30. Nice variety on menu, excellent starter in scallops with extremely nice main and simialarly nice dessert. Would go back and often

The Grand Hotel, Torquay. Not our usual type of restaraunt as we prefer larger portions. The food tasted really good, presentation excellent but in my opinion just not enough for what you pay.
