About Vermeer

Restaurant Vermeer just opposite Amsterdam’s Central Station in the Barbizon Palace Hotel is one of the finest restaurants in the city. The luxurious Old Dutch décor – marble tiled floors, monumental fireplaces, Delft tiles and plates, austere chandeliers – does suggest something of the master painter’s interiors. But it would take more than a servant-girl’s pearl earring wages to properly enjoy a meal at Vermeer. This is Michelin-starred, high-end, complex, refined European cuisine under the deft hand and watchful eye of Chris Naylor. The menu includes various irresistible multi-course and tasting options, and, while it changes with the season, offers dishes like starter of caviar and Colchester oysters served with veal tongue, truffle, red beet and seaweed chutney, main course of penne pasta with pheasant, walnuts, acorn bread and oloroso crème, and dessert of custard tart with figs, muscovado sugar and raisins. The wine list includes more than 300 labels, and you’ll want to avail yourself of the excellent sommelier’s opinions. Two private rooms can accommodate up to 20 or 30 respectively for memorable celebrations and events.

The meal at the Vermeer in Amsterdam was one of the highlights of our trip! I had a very creative lobster dish for starters, it was delicious! however the lobster's body was well undercooked (and i know my sea food very well) and impossible to eat... I was disapointed as the cooked parts that i was able to pick out were delicious mixed with all the other components of that dish. The remaining courses were divine and perfectly confectioned, the service was up to standards too

Vermeer (within Barbizon Hotel) in Amsterdam was most enjoyable. Very attentive, knowledgeable sommelier. Exquisite food presentation with edible flowers used as decoration.Bonne bouche of salad puree with eel was outstanding.Onion presented in different forms married well with scallops for innovative starter. Turbot with parsley, cauliflower and aubergine purees was delicious. Wide-ranging wine list although a little pricey. Really enjoyed the rhubarb dessert and selection of petit fours.

This was a special birthday meal, we came from London and found this to be the highlight of our visit to Amsterdam. The food was imaginative and very tasty with good attention to detail. The dining room was spacious and together with attentive yet not overbearing service provided a nice atmosphere. Would recommend for special occasions.
