About Spirito di Vino

Spirito di Vino restaurant in Rome’s fascinating Trastevere section enjoys a nice play on words, ‘divine spirit’ and ‘spirit of wine’. We know which we’d choose. This family-run restaurant is built on the bones of the oldest synagogue in Rome and the owner claims that with each step he descends to the – thousand-bottle – wine cellar, he goes back 75 years to before the Colosseum was built to what was formerly a tiny open square. And today? A romantic, private restaurant with arched doorways, Etruscan red walls, white table linens and a charming, welcoming bar. Father is at the stove, mother is front of house and son is sommelier. Dishes include things like lemon-spiked spaghetti with tuna and dill, or ancient Roman recipes like wine and apple marinated pork that was apparently a favourite of Julius Caesar’s.

Went for New Years Eve, resturant was lovely and had lots of history which the owner took delight in explaining. Family service was really good fun and food was also enjoyable. Wine was excelent. Only bad point really was that food took a long time to come- three courses went on for over 2.5 hours but they were busy.

The father and son team at Spirito di Vino with their set patter and attempts at being funny were a little OTT as described by another reviewer but well rehearsed and well intended. If you have a building which is steeped in history why not flaunt it at every opportunity! The food was very enjoyable: the fillet steak melted in the mouth and is highly recommended. The coffee mousse was also everything you'd expect it to be. All in all a positive experience.

I would recommend it with a few reservations. The food is very good and tasty-well presented with an interesting menu. The reservations are the family. The father is reserved and gives each table a long history of the premises etc etc then he goes on to explain every dish in detail .The menu is in english,.The son,the sommelier is brash- tasted our wine himself declared it good and poured,He shouts' Mama' every time he goes to the kitchen. She cooks-she never appeared-is she there? All a bit OTT
