We say…

Arriving by train? De Compagnon restaurant in the very heart of Amsterdam’s old city is five strolling minutes from Centraal Station – and it’s worth finding. Down a side alley, De Compagnon seats just 35 diners over three floors with windows and doors that open onto the water of Damrak. Small it may be, but the effect is light and airy, comfortable and cosy. Bert van Buschbach is in the kitchen, creating traditionally-styled French/Burgundian cuisine while Sara van Buschbach’s domain is the front of house and the superb and celebrated French wine list. Meeting facilities are terrific: a private room seating up to 12 and a wine cellar that can accommodate parties up to 20. Private dining here means your own waiter and chef too. Dishes include starter of salad of sautéed scallops crumbed in dried ceps, main course of whole fried guinea fowl with creamy truffle sauce and sliced fresh truffled (for two) and red fruit with curds and red fruit sorbet for dessert. Of the 300 wines, about 200 are listed at under euros 50, with a very nice selection of half bottles.

Signature dish

Generlously filled fish soup, accompanied by garlic mayonaisse made with red chillies and croutons

Sample dishes

  • Ravioli, stuffed with munster cheese, served in a tomato stock, €16.50
  • Vegetarian spring roll, stuffed with various vegetables and goat’s cheese, €21.00

Went to De compagnon on the 15/01/10 to celebrate my girlfriends bday. Although right in the centre of Amsterdam, the restaurant is tucked down a small lane overlooking the Damrak canel. Quite hard to find. Good menu but not cheap. The 'grand dessert' is a must, it's a selection of puddings and great for sharing. The restaurant is in a lovely old canel house, very romantic with candle light and canel views. Service was average. Would recommend for a special meal.

Hiding on a tiny street off Waormoesstraat, facing a canal, De Compagnon is a very cosy restaurant. Not to many tables, so the service tends to get more personal. Me and my wife went there to celebrate the beginning of our trip and it was worth it. We shared the quintet of goose liver as a starter, then had the whole fried guinea fowl, with truffle sauce. To drink, we submitted to the "wine arrangements" offered by the house and were pretty satisfied with it.

De Compagnon is situated on the edge of the red light district of Amsterdam down an alley that without Goggle maps would be hard to find. The meal was excellent and well served. Not cheap but this is a restaurant that serves quality special meals. With wine it was 130 euros for two but considering we were there for most of the night it was better than spending 10 euros a time at the local bars. If you want a special night this is the place to go.
