Party & group booking

This South Indian vegetarian restaurant is already a favourite of the rich and famous - including the Pakistani cricket team - so it should be one of your first choices for group celebrations, office dos and parties. The zig-zagging interior is smart and uncluttered with lime-coloured walls and wooden floor, and the sky-lit rear section can be hired for private events.

We say…

Just because you're up in town doing the Oxford Street shopping thing or the Madame Tussaud's touristy thing doesn't mean you have to fall into a fast-food joint, especially if your sensibilities tend away from meat. Because there's Woodlands! A wonderful South Indian vegetarian and vegan restaurant waiting to tempt you with the delights of this lovely cuisine. The zig-zagging interior is smart and uncluttered with lime-coloured walls and wooden floor, and a skylight at the back. Woodlands attracts quite a starry array of diners, including the Pakistani cricket team, as well as adoring business folk and locals. Try starters like vegetable samosas, quick-fried battered spicy cashewnuts, or lentil doughnuts in yoghurt, main courses gorgeous dosas - sort of Indian crepes - offered with a variety of fillings, like seasoned potato, onions, and peas, served with lentil soup and coconut chutney, or one of the special dishes like chickpeas in tomato and light masala sauce. Or just order one of the thalis and let the chefs decide for you!

Sample dishes

  • Dahi vada (a refreshing dish of lentil doughnuts immersed in cool yoghurt, £4.25
  • Paneer dosa (pancake filled with homemade cottage cheese and mild spice), £5.25
  • Gulab Jamun (homemade condensed milk in a rose and saffron syrup), £3.75

The vegetarian dishes at Woodlands restaurant in Marylebone are deliciously spicy and aromatic. Service is friendly and efficient, and the place has the feel of a favourite local venue. If you fancy an Indian meal but something different from the usual lamb pasanda and chicken korma, Woodlands will fit the bill. Talking of which, it's excellent value: we stuffed ourselves for £25 a head.

We had a bigger party than normal on this visit to Woodlands, and we took the approach of letting the owner take responsibility for ordering. Needless to say, we were again not disappointed! There were five of us and he selected an interesting mix of starters, ensuring that there were five portions for us. Similarly for the mains they made us smaller versions of a masala dosa so we each had one, plus 4 delicious accompanying curries. Another delicious meal at our favourite Indian!
