We say…

Situated in the heart of Mayfair, The Connaught Hotel has always been one of London’s most desirable dining destinations. The wood-panelled dining room exudes old world charm, with bold prints and sumptuous fabrics adding a contemporary flourish. The restaurant, which recently won its first Michelin star, is an ideal setting for business lunches and romantic dinners but also offers a first class brunch menu. Hélène Darroze, who divides her time between the UK and Paris, has created a menu that reflects her passion for the regional, seasonal flavours of South West France. Popular dishes include the saddle and rack of milk fed lamb with caramelised red endives and the line caught sea bass with white asparagus and cockle jus.

Signature dish

Oven-roasted pavé of line-caught sea bass with poached white asparagus from Les Landes and cockle jus with seaweed butter.

Sample dishes

  • Royale of green asparagus, poached egg “poulette”, beef jus with taggiasche olives,
  • Pave of Scottish salmon 'Label Rouge' cooked on the skin, white asparagus from Les Landes, citrus butter sauce and salmon eggs
  • Asperge-lemon sorbet, chips, hazelnut crumble with blood orange foam

We ate the set lunch at the Helene Darroze Restaurant in the Connaught Hotel in Mayfair on 22/01/10. The service is excellent, attention to detail with regards food, wine, etc is exemplery. The quality of food we could not fault, although the portions are very small. We did find we were pleasantly full by the end of lunch. A lot of care has gone into each plate with regards texture and taste. I would recommend this restaurant for price, experience, ambience and setting.

The tasting menu is quite good value at £85 relative to other Michelin starred restaurants. The stand out dishes were the Foie gras terrine served with a dried fruit compote and the Roast Pigeon which as superbly tender. The roon as been rearranged very well since Angela Hartnett's departure. My only criticism relates to the wine list were wines are expensive - a number of well know wines at 4-5x the price one could buy them at well known off licence.

The food was very tasty but the portions were miniscule. Also the dessert was unimpressive
